The Green Deal: a voice and role for young people

14.12.2022

As many initiatives and deals arise, so does the amount of questions asked, which all interconnect on one essential subject, youth. There is no doubt that our future will be defined by what we raise today, as we try to do an excellent job at that, we may question what this means to these very people. One of these great initiatives is The Green Deal.

The European Green Deal presents a roadmap for making the EU’s economy sustainable by turning climate and environmental challenges into opportunities across all policy areas and making the transition just and inclusive for all. The European Green Deal aims to boost the efficient use of resources by moving to a clean, circular economy and stopping climate change, reverting biodiversity loss and cutting pollution. It outlines investments needed and financing tools available and explains how to ensure a just and inclusive transition. It covers all sectors of the economy, notably transport, energy, agriculture, buildings, and industries such as steel, cement, ICT, textiles and chemicals.

Apart from its immense positive mission and positive outcomes, it also has a deeper and more meaningful value, rooted in what it means to our youth. Being an initiative primarily heard of and valued in our community, it spreads a positive message to everyone, especially young impressionable teens. As technology is spreading at an immense speed, so can this initiative. The ability to be informed on what our planet is facing and how we can work to make it better is what can make our lives healthier and happier. Climate change, pollution and other environmental challenges are topics that everyone should be aware of, not only people which are working on taking greater steps to revert the damage done, but also our youth. Our youth is the missionary who we seem to be missing. These different topics all have a great impact on what our youth’s future will be like and will be affected by, so why are we not listening to our youth and considering their role in our future?

This is our voice, our role model and our main challenge and it should be put into consideration in every action taken by our current leaders. The future of our lives, our hard work, and our aspirations are what need to be appreciated as they should give value to the blood, sweat and tears our ancestors put in to make all that we have possible.

Many policy areas are put into The Green Deal and some of them are:
1. A zero pollution ambition for a toxic-free environment
2. Preserving and restoring ecosystems and biodiversity
3. Accelerating the shift to sustainable and smart mobility
4. Supplying clean, affordable and secure energy
5. Mobilising industry for a clean and circular economy

It is undeniable that these policy areas are bound to make distinct changes in the way we live and what we value as people. As technology has taken our lives and youth by a storm, this is a great way to change the narrative and rewrite what our planet may face. It is an amazing opportunity for our community to be more intertwined, connected and in touch with what reality is and our impact on our planet. This connection will now make our future generations value hard work, responsible for our planet and will teach them what a healthy lifestyle is, as a result of not only The Green Deal but the work put in by our youth.

As a young person, I can say that this gives me hope, not only for this generation but also for the many generations to come. I value this great opportunity and I see it as something that will change the narrative, as it is such a big part of our life and the way we see the future and how it can be changed if it is started by positive initiatives like these.
